President Donald Trump slammed the Department of Justice (DOJ) in a tweet Monday for being an “embarrassment to our country” by “slow walking” its response to congressional subpoenas for documents regarding its politically charged investigations during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“So sad that the Department of ‘Justice’ and the FBI are slow walking, or even not giving, the un-redacted documents requested by Congress. An embarrassment to our country!” Trump tweeted Monday morning.

The DOJ and the FBI face widespread criticism for how they handled their politicized investigations into 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and address for official business as secretary of state.

Although multiple congressional committees issued subpoenas for the documents over the past several months, the DOJ’s response has been sluggish.

Former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who was then chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued subpoenas in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Most recently, House Committee on the Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) subpoenaed 1.2 million DOJ documents regarding the Clinton investigation in late March. These documents are the same that Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has in his investigation into matter.

Of the 1.2 million documents requested, Goodlatte told Fox News host Laura Ingraham Wednesday on “The Ingraham Angle” that he had only received 3,000 of them — and there was no “good justification for the delay.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Tuesday in a statement that he is “committed to ensuring that the bureau is being transparent and responsive to legitimate congressional requests.” Wray said he had doubled the number of FBI staff members dedicated to fulfilling Goodlatte’s request.

“This is about how the government — including possibly the White House and the Obama administration, but certainly the FBI and the Justice Department — may have subverted justice in the dramatically different way they handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation and how they attempted to conduct an investigation into the Trump campaign,” Goodlatte told Ingraham.

Allegations of pro-Clinton and anti-President Donald Trump biases have plagued the DOJ and FBI for months. Although the DOJ is conducting an internal review and congressional committees are doing separate oversight reviews, the exceptionally slow pace of compliance has frustrated Trump and the lawmakers.

For his part, the president repeatedly has accused the DOJ and FBI of exhibiting marked bias against him.

“The top leadership and Investigators of the FBI and the Justice Department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats and against Republicans, something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago,” Trump tweeted on February 2. “Rank & File are great people!”
