President Donald Trump said during an ITV interview with Piers Morgan airing Sunday evening that the United States could re-enter the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change if the country received a “completely different deal” than the “terrible” one it entered into under former President Barack Obama.

Trump announced in June 2017 he would withdraw the U.S. from the deal because it was “very unfair, at the highest level, to the United States.” The president said then the U.S. could resume talks on the agreement to “see if we can make a deal that’s fair.”

During the Sunday ITV interview, Trump said he’d “go back in” if he could reach a better deal for U.S. citizens.

“First of all, it was a terrible deal for the United States. If they made a good deal, there’s always a chance we’d get back,” Trump said. “But it was a terrible deal for the United States. It was unfair to the United States.”

Noting that he believed in “clean air” and good stewardship of the environment, the president reiterated he would consider entering into “a completely different deal” with the other nations.

“As usual, they took advantage of the United States. We were in a terrible deal,” Trump said. “Would I go back in? Yeah, I’d go back in. As you know, I like [French President] Emmanuel [Macron]. I would love to, but it’s got to be a good deal for the United States.”

Macron, along with other world leaders, lobbied hard for Trump to reconsider withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.

During an interview last week on BBC’s “The Andrew Marr Show,” Macron warned there would be “no new negotiation” for the U.S.

“You join or you don’t join,” Macron said.

In justifying his withdrawal from the climate change deal, Trump denounced the deal’s “onerous energy restrictions,” which could cost the U.S. as much as 2.7 million jobs by 2025, according to a National Economic Research Associates report.

The president also noted that the economy could lose $3 trillion and 6.5 million industrial jobs while some households suffered a loss of $7,000 in income over the next few decades.

Trump also told Morgan during the interview that British Prime Minister Theresa May should have taken a “tougher stand” by fighting for better Brexit negotiations for the British people as the United Kingdom withdraws from the European Union.

“Would it be the way I negotiate? No, I wouldn’t negotiate it the way it’s negotiated,” Trump said. “But I have a lot of respect for your prime minister, and I think they’re doing a good job. I think I would have negotiated it differently. I would have had a different attitude.”

Trump said that if he were in May’s shoes, he “would have said that the European Union is not cracked up to what it’s supposed to be, and I would have taken a tougher stand in getting out. I have a lot of problems with the European Union.”

“It’s very unfair. I’ve had a lot of problems with European Union, and it may morph into something very big from that standpoint, from a trade standpoint,” Trump said.

The president said he believes the British people’s concerns over mass migration across Europe contributed heavily to the Brexit vote.

“I said [that] because of trade, but mostly immigration, Brexit is going to be a big upset. And I was right,” Trump said. “I know the British people and understand them … They don’t want people coming from all over the world into Britain [when] they don’t know anything about these people.”
