An Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers and their families to a retreat in West Virginia collided with a garbage truck Wednesday in a crash that left one person dead and multiple officials injured.

There were no fatalities among the members of Congress. Lawmakers with medical training rushed to aid the injured around them, according to numerous reports. The crash threw the lawmakers from their seats and caused “probably every single one of them” to hit their heads on the backs of the seats in front of them, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), who was on the train, told Fox News’ “Outnumbered.”

Sessions estimated that the train was traveling at 70 mph.

“The local fire department is here, first responders, but this was without question a big wreck and one which — I don’t know that anyone else who was on the train, but I know probably 200 congressmen and senators are on the train also that was headed to our destination in West Virginia,” Sessions said.

“There are now probably 25 emergency vehicles here,” he added. “We’ve had several members who did need medical attention, and we are moving forward to just check each other. We immediately checked each other.”

Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) told Fox News, “It was a very high-speed collision.”

“There was no braking that was felt. We hit an immediate impact and went from 70 [mph] to zero very quickly,” Denham said.

Sessions estimated that between 15 and 20 people received medical attention, including those potentially suffering from concussions.

“I would confirm to you that many people took a hard hit to the head,” he said. “The concussion protocol — that’s probably what they’re checking on.”
