Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions said Sunday Donald Trump “will have a very good chance of winning,” despite lagging in recent polls, because the Republican nominee’s candidacy is built on a foundation of policies “the American people believe in.”

“This campaign is not over,” Sessions said on ABC News’ “This Week” after a series of setbacks and media-fueled controversies for have dragged Trump down in the polls, “The American people want change. They know we’re on … the wrong track.”

“I think he can still win and will have a very good chance of winning … because the issues are what the American people believe in and he’s right and they are right,”

Sessions emphasized that Trump’s focus on trade reform that puts the priorities of U.S. workers first, combatting terrorism, bolstering national security, securing the borders and clamping down on illegal immigration are all “correct” and in line with Americans thinking.

“I think he can still win and will have a very good chance of winning … because the issues are what the American people believe in and he’s right and they are right,” Sessions said.

Sessions also said “it’s going to be a battle” for party control of the U.S. Senate in November, and Republicans should take heed of where the American people are on the key issues Trump has brought to the forefront.

“I think the Republican Party needs to listen to what Donald Trump’s been saying. He’s talking to the American people, what they care about,” Sessions said, adding that the trade deals the U.S. has made “have not worked” and the people know that.

“These trade deals have not worked. I have supported them, Martha, in the past. I’ve looked at the results of them. They have not produced anything like promised,” Sessions said. “We’re bringing in more workers than we have jobs for. Wages have declined by $4,000 per median – median income has declined $4,000 since 2000.”

Ultimately, Sessions admonished the GOP for failing to listen to the people and for not taking Trump seriously.

“And so I guess what I’m saying to you is our party, our leadership needs to be more sensitive to concerns of the people … and if we can get more to the Trump message and work together better, it will benefit both Trump and the Republican candidates,” Sessions said.

Sessions said its critical for Trump however to get out of primary election mode and to tailor his message on these core issues for a different electorate in November.

“[Trump] had a lot of fun in the primaries. He was really charging away. And he enjoyed that,” Sessions said. “But it is a different thing to run a presidential election. You’re dealing even with a different constituency. And so he’s got to wrestle in his own heart, how does he communicate who he is, what he believes, the change he thinks he can bring to America, why what he’s doing is fulfilling the desires of the American people.”

“He does need to communicate – and I think he can – more effectively.”
