Second Amendment Under Fire

Donald Trump took a swipe at Hillary Clinton after she claimed that a “Trump America” would leave kids “at risk of violence and bigotry,” following his recent remarks about guns in classrooms.

Trump and Clinton’s most recent spat arose after Clinton criticized Trump’s Friday endorsement for president from the National Rifle Association. Saying that Trump would “mandate” that every single school in America require the presence of guns in the classroom, Clinton spoke Saturday at the Trayvon Martin Foundation’s Circle of Mothers event in Florida to a group of mothers who had lost their children to gun violence.

“If you want to imagine what Trump’s America will look like, picture more kids at risk of violence and bigotry. Picture more anger and fear.”

“[Trump] said that also on his first day in office, he’d mandate that every school in America allow guns in classrooms. Every school, he said. That’s no way to keep us safe,” Hillary had said. “If you want to imagine what Trump’s America will look like, picture more kids at risk of violence and bigotry. Picture more anger and fear.”

But Trump was having none of that. During a Sunday interview on “Fox & Friends,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee sought to clarify his position.

“I don’t want to have guns in classrooms — although in some cases, teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly, because … things that are going on in our schools are unbelievable,” Trump said. “You look at some of our schools — unbelievable what’s going on — but I’m not advocating guns in classrooms. But remember in some cases — and a lot of people have made this case — teachers should be able to have guns. Trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms.”

Trump and Clinton’s spat also coincided with Sen. Jeff Sessions’ slam on Fox News, in which he claimed Clinton was “the most anti-Second Amendment” presidential candidate the United States has ever entertained.

“This would be the greatest reduction of Second Amendment rights since the founding of the Republic.”

“This would be the greatest reduction of Second Amendment rights since the founding of the Republic,” Sessions said.

The senator also said that if Clinton were elected president and had the ability to fill the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat with a liberal nominee, the District of Columbia v. Heller decision that “protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms” could be overturned or otherwise harmed.

“She gets in, she will appoint somebody who changes it, and what that means is it’s no longer a personal right to have a gun, but every city, county, and state can completely ban firearms in America,” Sessions concluded.

Trump also agreed with Sessions’ basic assessment of the dangers a Clinton presidency could pose for the Second Amendment, and further highlighted the political and ideological importance the 2016 presidential election will hold for the Second Amendment’s future.

“Crooked Hillary Clinton wants to essentially abolish the 2nd Amendment. No gun owner can ever vote for Clinton!” Trump tweeted, before calling Clinton out for her own “hypocrisy” regarding legal gun carry.

“Crooked Hillary wants to get rid of all guns and yet she is surrounded by bodyguards who are fully armed,” Trump tweeted. “No more guns to protect Hillary!”
