The chief political strategist for embattled GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore tried on Sunday to frame Tuesday’s election in Alabama as a referendum on President Donald Trump and his agenda. Dean Young made his remarks in an appearance on the ABC News program “This Week.”

Moore, who fielded accusations during the last few weeks of having sexually pursued teenage girls decades ago, divided the Republican Party by refusing to back out of the race against Democrat Doug Jones. After weeks of avoiding a direct endorsement, Trump threw his full support behind Moore last Monday. And during his interview Sunday, Young argued the president’s support for Moore is critical at this late stage in the race.

“Well, President Trump’s support is very, very important for the people of Alabama and this nation,” Young told “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz. “You say this is President Trump’s agenda. And that’s why it’s so important that Judge Moore win this race.”

Young pointed to remarks Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) made Saturday while campaigning with Jones, as reported by Vice News. Booker wondered why Trump refused to do the “honorable thing” and resign after fielding his own allegations of sexual misconduct toward the end of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“Last night we had Doug Jones, the liberal Democrat, with one of his Senate buddies, Cory Booker, who said that the president should resign,” Young noted. “So this is Donald Trump on trial in Alabama. If the people of Alabama vote for this liberal Democrat Doug Jones, then they’re voting against the president who they put in office at the highest level.”

Amid all of the controversies surrounding the Senate race, Young urged Alabamians to remember they voted for the president and his “America First” and “Make America Great Again” policies back in November 2016.

With Senate Democrats obstructing the president at every turn, Moore’s chief political strategist argued it’s crucial that the Alabama seat remain in GOP hands.

“So it’s very important for Donald Trump, and again, it’s ground zero for President Donald Trump,” Young said. “If they can beat him, they can beat his agenda, because Judge Moore stands with Donald Trump and his agenda. Judge Moore wants the wall. Judge Moore wants to lower taxes. Judge Moore wants a military that’s strong. And that’s who Judge Moore is.”
