A report released Thursday estimates that more than 2.5 million illegal immigrants currently reside in the metropolitan areas of Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York — all of which have publicly vowed to harbor illegal immigrants from deportation.

The report from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center shows where the vast majority of illegal immigrants reside and which regions would be most affected by more robust enforcement of federal immigration law.

“About 61 percent of immigrants in the country illegally live in 20 metropolitan areas,” the report added.

The report finds nearly 37 percent of immigrants that reside in Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, and Denver lack legal status, compared to 26 percent nationwide.

The Pew report concluded by showing that there are roughly 11.1 million immigrants in the country illegally — or 3.5 percent of the overall U.S. population. For example, nearly 17 percent of immigrants in San Francisco lack legal status compared with 35 percent in the Las Vegas area.

The report demonstrates the scale of immigration lawlessness and adds credence to the administration’s position that action should be taken. The cost to taxpayers of harboring such a massive population of illegal immigrants in the United States is a staggering $113 billion a year, according to a separate report from Fox News.

Liberal activist organizations, often funded by wealthy leftist donors, have pushed mass resistance to the enforcement of federal immigration law under the new administration. This past weekend, thousands protested in San Francisco and carried signs saying “Love knows no borders,” “No ban, no wall,” and “Will swap one Trump for 10,000 refugees.”

In Phoenix, a woman in the country illegally, who was allowed to remain here under the Obama administration, was taken into custody Wednesday and sent back to Mexico. The arrest sparked a contentious protest outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs office, which led to the group initially blocking the vehicles from leaving.

In downtown Los Angeles, hundreds joined protests after more than 100 illegal immigrants were rounded up in raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. According to ICE, the aliens taken into custody for deportation consisted of street gang members, child sex offenders, and foreign nationals with significant drug trafficking convictions.

ICE officials indicated that these operations were “routine” and not part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, but that did that stop many from protesting the streets and the ICE offices.
