In addition to a knack for inciting racial division and a blatant disregard for the Constitution, a defining feature of the Obama presidency has been its unashamed and unabashed dishonesty.

When Obama was putting all his efforts in passing the Affordable Care Act, he insisted famously that “if you like your doctor or health care provider, you can keep them. If you like your health care plan, you can keep that too.” The president made such assurances more than 20 times before the law was passed.

Even after the law’s signing — and before the full disastrous consequences of the bill were known to the public, Obama was still making such assurances. “For those Americans who already have health insurance, the only changes you will see under the law are new benefits, better protections from insurance company abuses, and more value for every dollar you spend on health care,” he said. “If you like your plan you can keep it and you don’t have to change a thing due to the health care law.”

In 2013, when evidence surfaced that suggested the IRS was targeting conservative groups, Obama insisted that couldn’t be the case, but nevertheless dispatched his henchman, then-Attorney General Eric Holder, to launch a half-hearted investigation into the affair.

Nothing incriminating was discovered and no charges were filed — and later in 2015, in an appearance on “The Daily Show,” Obama said that the “scandal” was the result of poorly trained IRS employees and doubted if conservative groups were truly targeted.

Last week, however, the IRS released a list of 426 organizations it had targeted during the scandal. Nearly all of them are conservative or appear conservative-leaning.

When Obama pursued his nuclear deal with Iran, he assured us that all would be well. The Iranian regime wanted only to be a fully accepted member of the international community. Nuclear weapons were in truth the last thing on its mind, the administration told us.

Now, however, we know that was simply not the case — the Obama administration knew the Iranian regime was still dangerous and knew full well its desire for obtaining nuclear capabilities was not limited to the purpose of cheaper energy.

In a profile of Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, The New York Times inadvertently revealed that the passage of the Iran deal was the result of a well-planned strategy of misinformation. They intentionally lied to the American people.

The following passage from the New York Times profile is as terrifying as it is telling:

In the spring of last year, legions of arms-control experts began popping up at think tanks and on social media, and then became key sources for hundreds of often-clueless reporters. “We created an echo chamber,” he admitted, when I asked him to explain the onslaught of freshly minted experts cheerleading for the deal. “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.”

Then there was the attack on Benghazi, which both Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted — well beyond the point at which it was clear they were lying — was the result of a spontaneous violent outburst to an offensive, anti-Muslim video produced by an American, rather than the coordinated al-Qaeda attack we now know it to be.

And just as Obama dispatched Susan Rice to deny that Benghazi was a coordinated attack by Islamic extremists, so too did he dispatch Loretta Lynch to deny that the shooting in Orlando was a coordinated attack by an Islamic extremist. Lynch claimed that the motivations of Omar Mateen — the self-acknowledged ISIS fighter who murdered nearly 50 people in cold blood in the name of Allah — “may never be known.” Lynch insisted she “can’t say we will be able to narrow it down to one” motivation.

This administration has been so nonchalant with its lies — and so insistent that those lies are true — that one gets the distinct impression Obama has surrounded himself with people who read “1984” and mistook it for a guidebook rather than a warning. “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength” might as well be the Obama administration’s motto.
