Russian President Vladimir Putin pushed back on a Washington Post report alleging President Donald Trump improperly divulged secrets to Russian officials during a meeting at the White House last week.

Putin, attending a news conference Wednesday with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni in Sochi, said he could provide proof Trump did not act inappropriately.

“It’s hard to imagine what else … these people who generate such nonsense and rubbish can dream up next.”

“What surprises me is that they are shaking up the domestic political situation using anti-Russian slogans,” Putin said, according to Reuters. “Either they don’t understand the damage they’re doing to their own country, in which case they are simply stupid, or they understand everything, in which case they are dangerous and corrupt.”

The Russian president said that he would be more than willing to provide Congress with a transcript — though not an audio recording — of Trump’s conversation at the White House with Lavrov.

The whole controversy over whether Trump used his legal right to declassify information wisely has been blown out of proportion, Putin claimed. The Russian president theorized that this must be a result of the Trump-Russia collusion hysteria permeating the U.S.

“It’s hard to imagine what else … these people who generate such nonsense and rubbish can dream up next,” Putin said of the American media.

Putin also directed a further jab at the The Post and the hostile media, joking that he had yet to hear of these “secrets” they insisted Trump divulged to Lavrov.

‘”I spoke to [Lavrov] today,” Putin said. “I’ll be forced to issue him with a reprimand because he did not share these secrets with us. Not with me, nor with representatives of Russia’s intelligence services. It was very bad of him.”
