MSNBC anchor Katy Tur said Thursday that GOP lawmakers use “apocalyptic messaging” when defending the Second Amendment — yet she didn’t level the same criticism at liberals who claim Republicans have “blood on their hands” for supporting the Second Amendment after mass shootings.

Tur was reacting to Wednesday’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida, where 17 people were killed by a former student, Nikolas Cruz, who has now been charged with the crimes. Cruz, who is 19, faces 17 counts of premeditated murder, one for each of the individuals he is accused of killing with a semi-automatic rifle.

During an interview with pro-gun control Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Tur noted that many GOP lawmakers who expressed their “thoughts and prayers” after the school shooting have received “big money” from the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“Lots of lawmakers that tweet those things are also being supported, getting a lot of big money from the NRA, from the gun lobby,” Tur said. “[Sen.] Marco Rubio is one of them — [the] Florida [Republican] senator called it ‘a terrible day you pray never comes.’ His campaign benefited from $3.3 million in funding and opposition attacks, thanks to the NRA,” she added.

“Sen. Cory Gardner from Colorado [a Republican as well] tweeted his heartbreak for the situation and prayers for first responders. Columbine and Aurora both happened in his state,” Tur continued, adding that “$3.9 million in NRA funds [went] to him.”

The MSNBC host also criticized President Trump, noting the NRA spent millions of dollars to support his 2016 presidential campaign.

“I was with the president when he visited the NRA and spoke at their convention in 2016, and the images around it were all very, very scary, Senator,” Tur said to Murphy. “That people were ‘coming to get you. You need to protect yourself. America is a dangerous place. And the government, if you allow Democrats to be in power, want to take your guns away.’ How do you combat that sort of apocalyptic messaging?”

Tur, however, appeared to have no issues at all with the sort of rhetoric that typically comes from liberals following every mass shooting in the U.S.

Murphy tweeted Wednesday that any lawmaker who is “doing nothing about this slaughter” is “an accomplice” to the victims’ deaths.

Chelsea Handler, the liberal and rapidly anti-Trump comedian, tweeted Wednesday, “We have to elect candidates that are not funded by the NRA in November. We have an opportunity to elect candidates who won’t allow kids to go to school and get shot. It is disgusting how many times this has happened, and Republicans do nothing. You all have blood on your hands.”

And Igor Volsky, vice president at the left-leaning Center for American Progress, tweeted Wednesday that Rubio and “every other senator who voted NO” on an assault weapons ban “have blood on their hands.”

But instead, Tur was concerned with Republicans’ “apocalyptic” support for the Second Amendment — and their fears that the federal government may one day eliminate the constitutional right to bear arms.
