MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski questioned President Donald Trump’s “patriotism” while theorizing that he only “cares about” himself, during Wednesday’s show.

“It starts and ends with Donald Trump. And I know it is a terrible thing to question someone’s patriotism, but you wonder what he cares about,” Brzezinski said. “You really do. I do. And I think there are others who are wondering what is driving him.”

“[Reputations] could be thrown away in one day by Donald Trump, this reckless, reckless president.”

Fellow co-host Joe Scarborough chimed in at that point when he claimed that Trump has made it “perfectly obvious” that he “cares only about himself,” and not the country.

“Well, Donald Trump cares about — he’s made it perfectly obvious, and I think a lot of people who have known him in the past knew he was self-involved. But to the degree that he cares only about himself — the degree that he cares only about himself above his country, above — it has been pretty surprising,” Scarborough said.

Trump’s successful nomination of a Supreme Court justice, his executive orders to boost U.S. job growth and his massive reinvestment in the U.S. military and more, apparently, were not enough to convince Scarborough and Brzezinski that Trump cares about his country.

To escalate matters even further, Scarborough pushed the idea that Trump impedes his officials’ efforts to serve their country. In particular, Scarborough mentioned U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, the latter of whom testified Tuesday in a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Scarborough insisted Trump’s “reckless” behavior undermines his administration’s ability to serve the public good.

“They want to serve their country. They want to try to temper this man. They want to try to do a good job to help this republic,” Sarborough said before bemoaning that their reputations “could be thrown away in one day by Donald Trump, this reckless, reckless president.”

Scarborough decided to compare the president with two major characters in the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel, “The Great Gatsby.”

“But you’ve got to go back to Tom and Daisy Buchanan. [Trump] just smashes up lives. He wrecks things,” Scarborough said. “And like Tom and Daisy Buchanan in ‘The Great Gatsby,’ they drive back to the mansion, and they just don’t give a damn about who they hurt, or who gets shot in the pool at the end.”

Toward the end of the novel, the eponymous character is shot in his own pool. Scarborough then clarified he wasn’t “talking about Donald Trump” being shot in a pool.
