A University of Miami professor has decided to make a unique design out of U.S. flags.

The professor, Billie Grace Lynn, has made U.S. flags into Ku Klux Klan hoods, and they will soon be on display at the University of Miami Art Gallery, according to the Miami Herald.

The “artwork” was inspired by the white supremacist march through the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in August, Lynn told the Herald.

The resulting melee between white supremacists and counterprotesters resulted in the deaths of a counterprotester and two state police officers, in a helicopter crash.

Lynn’s work is titled “American Mask.”

At Lynn’s website, she explains: “‘American Mask’ is a work suggesting that bigotry and racism are hiding behind our American flag. By using the shape of KKK hoods made from the American flags, I point to our sad history of intolerance and violence and hope that the work acts to awaken citizens to the danger of confusing bigotry with patriotism.”

While the display is not complete yet, the window aspect of the work has already caused anger on social media, according to the Miami New Times, which is housed in the same building as the gallery.

The exhibit, opening next week, will stand the U.S. flags made into Ku Klux Klan hoods “on a cart with wheels shaped like a Nazi swastika,” according to the New Times.

“This is neither art nor does it have a place in our society,” wrote one angry South Florida man on Facebook. “These are disrespectful to our nation. They are created and displayed in a manner as if to be actual hoods from the lowly group. Fictional. Why do liberals lie so much …?”

Lynn told the New Times she is “from Louisiana, and the Klan is really strong there. I am from the place where these people live. I am these people in some way.”

Lynn has been a professor of sculpture at UM for 12 years.

She previously caused a stir last decade, using Ken and Barbie dolls to create a dollhouse modeled after the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where U.S. soldiers mistreated Iraqi prisoners of war.
