MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host, Joe Scarborough, on Thursday rejected as “lunacy” President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy.

Scarborough was referring to the 76th anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese surprise attack on the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor.

“We actually saw yesterday 70 years of history being undercut, and it’s that post-war world and that framework that actually made America first,” Scarborough said. “That’s a great irony, that all of these things we did, all of these treaties, all of these conventions, all of these trade deals — the net effect was that the United States wasn’t first among equals. The United States was first.”

“And so the lunacy of having something called ‘America First,’ as you’re — when we are already first — to make America great again, when what you are doing is actually undermining the foundations of a world that actually the United States dominated, is lunacy,” Scarborough said.

“What happened today, Sunday morning in Hawaii, Sunday afternoon in the United States, was the end of something called America First, which was a compelling national movement to try to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world,” author Jon Meacham said. “And what we learned at Pearl Harbor was that history has a way of intruding itself upon us whether we want it to or not.”

Scarborough didn’t mention Trump by name, but it was clear he was referring to the President and his oft-repeated slogans, “America First” and “Make America Great Again.”

Steve Rattner, former counselor to then-Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner, added that he was “constantly struck by the contrast between [Franklin Delano] Roosevelt and a certain other president” in how they handled global affairs. Roosevelt was president 1933-1945.
