Donald Trump has the momentum in the race for the GOP nomination, but to unite the Republican Party he may eventually need to offer the vice presidential spot to Sen. Marco Rubio, LifeZette Editor-in-Chief Laura Ingraham said Sunday.

Ingraham, who appeared on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace, noted that Trump needs to find a way to bridge the gap with the Establishment. With Jeb Bush now out of the race, Rubio is the newly anointed candidate of the GOP elite, and putting him on the ticket could bring Republicans together and ensure Establishment-leaning GOP voters go to the polls in November.
“I can see something in the offing here, where if Trump keeps going, the compromise to the Establishment … could be a Trump/Rubio ticket,” said Ingraham. “I know people are horrified to hear that, maybe, but that’s what I’m seeing if I have to have a crystal ball right now.”
Ingraham also noted that Rubio was unable to secure a first-place finish in South Carolina, even after receiving endorsements from high-profile officials and having a campaign team with strong South Carolina operatives such as Warren Tompkins. This suggests long-term weakness for Rubio as the primaries go forward.
She also said Sen. Ted Cruz will have to make a decision on what he will do if he doesn’t chalk up more victories than just Iowa. “I don’t want to count out Ted Cruz — I think he has an amazing campaign operation — but he has 11 delegates, Trump has 61. And at this point, Cruz is going to have do some soul searching.”
Cruz, Ingraham added, may have to decide whether or not to throw in with Rubio or Trump — which would certainly give an edge to whichever candidate he chooses.
