Liar, Liar Pantsuit on Fire

Hillary Clinton, who is viewed as dishonest and untrustworthy by more than half of Americans, believes she has never lied to the American people. She claims she has always “tried to” tell the truth.

On Thursday night, Hillary Clinton appeared on CBS’s “Evening News” for an exclusive interview with anchor Scott Pelley. She was peppered with questions about her trustworthiness. After Pelley referenced Jimmy Carter’s famous line from 1976 when he promised the American people he would never lie to them, the newsman waited in silence for Clinton’s response.

That’s when a confident and controversy-plagued Clinton seized an opportunity to convince the American people of her own honesty, while also trying to convince herself, or so it seemed. “I have tried in every way I know how, literally from my years as a young lawyer to my time as secretary of state, to level with the American people,” Clinton said.

But Pelley didn’t let her off the hook. He pressed further, asking whether or not she had always told the truth to the American people. A smug and coy Clinton gave an unconvincing answer. “I’ve always tried to, always, always,” said Clinton.

Realizing that Clinton had skirted his question, he steamed forward with full force, calling her out for her inability to promise that she would never lie — unlike Carter. Pelley said to her, “Some people are gonna call that wiggle room that you just gave yourself.”

At that, Clinton rose up in her seat and looked visibly uncomfortable as her voice reached a screeching and defensive tone. “Well, but, you know.. You’re asking me to say, ‘Have I ever?’ I don’t believe I ever have. I don’t believe I ever will. I’m going to do the best I can to level with the American people,” said Clinton.

Less than forthcoming about a wide variety of issues, including her private email server, Benghazi, and Clinton Foundation donations, Hillary Clinton is suffocating under the weight of scandal and controversy.

Her honesty and trustworthiness have been brought to the forefront of the campaign as a result. Recent polling from Quinnipiac University shows that nearly 7 in 10 Americans view her as untrustworthy and dishonest — ranking her as the most untrusted candidate in the 2016 race.

The controversies surrounding Clinton and her campaign are having an impact on voters, and while she might believe she has never lied to the American people, their sentiments are not the same.
