Harry Reid and the Democrats’ Racial Hypocrisy

Sen. Harry “Republicans-are-racist” Reid is facing a chorus of criticism for allegedly encouraging a Muslim Democrat running for a U.S. House seat in Nevada to suspend his campaign last year by telling him he couldn’t win because of his religion.

The shocking revelation reveals the Democrats’ fundamental hypocrisy when it comes to race, religion and identity in America, as well as their patronizing contempt for the American voter.

The man who once claimed “racism has been prevalent in Republican politics for decades,” in a floor speech criticizing Donald Trump in December 2015, is allegedly racist.

“A Muslim cannot win this race,” Reid is said to have told Jesse Sbaih, a Muslim-American originally from Jordan. “You should not run for this office,” he said, according to Sbaih.

Reid’s camp denied completely his ever saying such words to Sbaih. “Jesse Sbaih is a liar and that’s why he is going to lose,” said Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman.

But Sbaih was able to produce emails and text messages from the time, including one in which he writes about being “profoundly disheartened and saddened that the Democratic Party is refusing to accept a candidate like me because of my religion and ethnicity.”

Sbaih told the Washington Post it was the first time in his 29 years living in America that he faced such opposition based on his religion. “It’s just absolutely shocking that this occurred,” he said.

Of course, Sbaih shouldn’t be too shocked to find out that the party that claims to stand for religious tolerance, racial equality and rainbows stands, in fact, for no such thing other than winning elections. Indeed, Sbaih found out the hard way that Democrats’ concern for minorities and belief in equality are only as strong as a given election requires them to be.

Reid’s words also paint an unflattering picture of Democrats’ view of the public at large. Democrats like Reid must be falling for their own party’s propaganda about the inherent racism of average Americans to believe that Jesse Sbaih couldn’t win one of the most ethnically diverse states in the country. Perhaps that accounts for the comparative lack of diversity among Democratic politicians when compared to Republicans.

Clearly Harry Reid and the Democrats are more than willing to preach racial equality but strongly reluctant to practice it. “Political leaders must condemn … hateful, un-American statements with their words and their actions,” Reid railed in his December anti-Trump diatribe. “Silence only empowers the bigots,” he said.

Thankfully Jesse Sbaih is speaking up, and one hopes his story will disempower the bigoted Reid.
