Hark! The Hateful Liberals Sing

The holiday season is nothing if not consistent.

During the roughly month-long period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Americans can count on hearing Christmas music wherever they go, being inundated by a barrage of commercials for holiday shopping deals, and listening to a chorus of irate progressives using the most wonderful time of the year as an excuse to attack Christians and Christianity.

On Monday, local officials in Knightstown, Indiana, were forced to remove a cross from atop the town’s Christmas tree after a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union threatened to send the town into bankruptcy.

“It is with regret and sadness that the Knightstown Town Council has had the cross removed from the Christmas tree on the town square and is expected to approve a resolution at the next council meeting stating they will not return the cross to the tree,” the council wrote in a Facebook post.

The case was initially brought by Knightstown resident Joseph Tompkins and enthusiastically taken up by the ACLU.

The ACLU argued that the cross’s presence on the tree violates the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. This is the favored legal tactic deployed by the anti-Christian Left.

Last week it was announced that the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a group founded ostensibly to promote secularism but which appears to spend most of its time engaged in anti-Christian crusades, threatened St. Bernard, Ohio, with a lawsuit over the town’s display of a nativity scene.

At the end of November, Menominee, Michigan, city manager Tony Graff announced that the town was removing its nativity scene partly due to fears of an FFRF lawsuit. “It was determined by the city attorney that we were looking at a violation of our own policy and so the decision was made to remove it,” said Graff, who added that the FFRF has “sent letters to the city for many years in a row questioning the policy.”

“Even if you have a city with 99 percent of the populace being Christian and supporting a Christian Nativity, that 1 percent is relying on Constitutional protection to say that the government must remain neutral on this question and that’s exactly what the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment is,” Ryan Jayne, a FFRF attorney, told the local Fox affiliate.

The concept of “separation of church and state” does not exist anywhere explicitly within the Constitution. The First Amendment only prohibits the federal government from establishing a state religion and guarantees individual citizens the right to practice their own freely.

Indeed, in most of these attacks on “public displays of religion,” the only ones violating anyone’s constitutional rights are organizations like the ACLU and the FFRF.

Half a century of activist court decisions however have contributed to the rise of a cultural climate in which Christians are routinely bullied into silence by militant atheists and Christianity is openly persecuted in the name of “tolerance.”

But the war on Christmas goes far beyond trying to stop the display of nativity scenes and crosses on public property. Political correctness now mandates companies throw “holiday parties,” while schools go on “winter break.” And of course, as Donald Trump is often wont to point out, people say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

For decades the Left has been doing everything in its power to strip Christ from the holiday that bears His name, and turn the glorious Christmas season — with all its history, beauty, meaning, and tradition — into a generic, rootless “holiday season” dedicated to little more than mass consumerism.
