Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was adamant House GOP leaders do not have enough votes to pass the American Health Care Act Thursday because “it’s just not a bill that repeals Obamacare” during an interview Wednesday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

Jordan, a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus and its former chairman, said he and many of his colleagues oppose the AHCA because it fails to “keep our commitments and promises to the American people.” Even though President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) have been touting the bill for weeks and wrangling House members for their support, Jordan said “we’re at the point where the appropriate strategy is to say, ‘Start over.'”

“So, we’re opposed to it and there aren’t enough votes to pass it right now, that’s for darn sure.”

“Look, sometimes you learn more from losses than you learn from the wins. And you learn how to change things, do things better and do things in way that’s going to achieve success,” Jordan told LifeZette Editor-in-Chief Laura Ingraham. “I think we’re at that point. Let’s just start over and do it right.”

The way the AHCA stands now, Jordan said the majority of the House Freedom Caucus will not vote for it.

“So, we’re opposed to it and there aren’t enough votes to pass it right now, that’s for darn sure,” Jordan insisted. “It’s just not a bill that repeals Obamacare. It’s not a bill that lowers premiums. It’s not a bill that unites Republicans. Every major conservative organization in the country’s opposed to this thing … So, this bill doesn’t lower premiums and it doesn’t do what we promised the American people we were going to do.”

The Ohio congressman lamented that “now that it counts” and now that the Republicans claim the White House and majorities in the House and Senate, the party is refusing to pass a “clean” repeal and replace. Although Ryan and Secretary of Health and Human Service Tom Price have insisted doggedly that much of what the conservatives are calling for will be included in Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the three-phase plan, Jordan said he isn’t buying it.

“This other key question is, will Phase 2 and Phase 3 even happen? No,” Jordan said. “We know that the regulations that Dr. Price is going to change are going to get challenged in court. That’s the way the Left operates. We know that’s going to happen.”

Jordan added that “99 times out of a hundred what we send to the Senate doesn’t get better.”

In Trump’s meeting with reluctant GOP congresspeople, Jordan said they have told the president that “no one wants you to succeed more” than they do.

“Last fall during that campaign, it was Freedom Caucus guys who were busting their tails. I mean, I was helping him [in] Ohio when our governor [John Kasich] wasn’t,” Jordan said, adding the Freedom Caucus members told Trump that “we want you to succeed.”

“We want America to prosper. We want to keep our commitments and promises to the American people,” Jordan reaffirmed. “We genuinely believe this bill doesn’t do it, and that’s why we’re opposed to it. And that’s why we’re working to make changes to this bill that will accomplish what we all campaigned on last year.”
