When in the course of human events, it becomes politically expedient for a people to eject all appreciation of their own history and values — then watch out if you’re a historic figure with your likeness and name on currency, holidays, events, or statuary.

Democratic Party committees nationwide commonly hold annual fundraisers called the Jefferson, Jackson, Bailey Dinner in honor of figures who have contributed mightily to the history of the major political party.

In a rush to dissolve all bonds to American history in the name of political correctness, the Connecticut Democratic Party has now become the first in the nation to drop Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson from their annual dinner’s name.

The reason given by party leadership? President Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, was a slave owner, and President Jackson presided over the infamous Trail of Tears displacement of Native Americans.

“I see it as the right thing to do,” Democratic State Party Chairman Nick Balletto said Wednesday night to Hearst Connecticut Media’s Neil Vigdor.

Local NAACP leaders cheered the tearing down of the American icons.

“I would applaud the current leaders in Connecticut in making the symbolic first step and striving to right the wrongs of the past,” said Scot X. Esdaile, president of the state NAACP, according to Hearst Connecticut Media.

University of Virginia law professor Robert Turner was far less enthused at the move. “It is a sad and short-sighted decision based upon tragic ignorance,” Turner said to Vigdor.

Liberal champions of aggressive political correctness are sure to try to take the Connecticut Democrats move and turn it into momentum to permanently tarnish the reputations of the third and seventh presidents.

Plan a visit to Washington, D.C., soon before revisionist history progressives tear down the Jefferson Memorial. While planning your trip, you might also take time to frame a $2 and $20 bill. Future generations deserve to remember that Americans once revered their past.
