Bomb Goes Off in NYC, but CNN Obsesses Over Trump’s Diet Coke Habits

The network faces mockery for the multiple segments it devoted to coverage of the president's eating and drinking preferences

A terrorist tried to blow up the New York subway system early Monday — but CNN hosts and correspondents obsessed all day long and into Tuesday about President Donald Trump’s love of junk food and his habit of drinking as many as 12 Diet Cokes a day.

“The most trusted name in news” talked all day about Trump’s health — and all but salivated over The New York Times’ Saturday report that claimed Trump consumes a dozen Diet Cokes a day.

"President Trump reportedly drinks up to 12 Diet Cokes a day. Is that good?" CNN host Chris Cuomo asked Tuesday on "New Day." "I mean, I guess it's better than regular Coke."

"Is it?" co-host Alisyn Camerota chimed in, struggling to stifle her laughter throughout the segment.

Cuomo and Camerota then brought in CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to discuss the dangers of drinking 12 Diet Cokes a day while loving Big Macs and chocolate shakes.

Gupta also spoke with CNN's Don Lemon on Monday night on "CNN Tonight" about the perils that might be dogging the president's health. Gupta told Lemon it's important "to talk about cardiovascular disease, talk about diabetes, talk about increasing your risk for dementia."

He continued, "But also on a more acute basis, if you will, irritability, obviously worsening insomnia, poor judgment. No doctor, no matter who it is, is going to recommend this as a diet for him."

CNN host Brooke Baldwin also felt the need to devote a segment Monday to covering the president's Diet Coke-drinking habits — while pointing to the 12 cans CNN helpfully lined up on-screen.

Because CNN felt that the Times story on Trump's diet deserved extensive coverage on these eventful two days, it fielded criticism and mockery.

"Astonishing how quickly CNN pivoted from NYC explosion to ridiculous story Trump drinking a lot of Diet Coke #FactsFirst," Rich Noyes, Media Research Center's (MRC) research director, tweeted Monday.

"U.S. News was talking about the bombing at 7:54 [a.m.]. Nearly an hour later, CNN is whining about [how] Donald Trump drinks Diet Cokes and watches too much TV instead of reporting about terrorism in New York City," Dan Gainor, MRC's vice president, told Fox News on Monday.

Daily Caller reporter Amber Athey tweeted Monday, "Remember when everyone criticized Fox News for talking about the hamburger emoji? I would love people to give the same scrutiny to @CNN and @MSNBC, who cut away from a terror attack to talk about Trump watching TV and drinking diet coke."

BuzzFeed correspondent Vera Bergengruen tweeted Monday, "The president drinks a lot of Diet Coke and CNN is ON IT."
