Donald Trump has pulled off an historic win against Hillary Clinton, and Americans hungry for change are celebrating from coast to coast — and pinching themselves as dreams for a better future can begin to become a reality in the early Wednesday morning hours.

It was a long night for America’s families. As results rolled in throughout Tuesday night, emotions ranged from nervous, to confident, to downright scared. Three people LifeZette spoke to during the night didn’t even turn on their TVs until after 8:30 p.m. ET.

“This can only be divine intervention,” said one Massachusetts mom. “God is giving us a chance to change our course.”

“I just can’t handle it right now — I am too nervous to watch,” said one Hampton, Iowa, resident. “It’s been such a long process that I feel like personally, I can’t take any more.”

In Massachusetts, there was pacing and armchair quarterbacking. “I can’t watch,” Boston-area husband Eric Donaghey said. He also said he couldn’t eat or sit down. His wife was much more pragmatic — at 8 p.m., she predicted a Clinton win.

“I can’t see this not working out for Hillary — they are much more organized on the ground,” she said. By 9:30 p.m. she had changed her tune a bit. “I can’t believe the numbers and all the ‘too close to calls,'” she said, clearly amazed. “Wednesday is going to be very interesting in America, either way.”

An Austin, Texas, nonprofit administrator and Clinton supporter was feeling shocked and bereft as Trump racked up electoral votes, after being certain for weeks that Clinton would coast into the Oval Office.

“I just thought it was going to be a Clinton cakewalk, frankly,” she said. “I’m obsessively checking Twitter and watching about four television channels — I am way too nervous about this to say much right now.”

Sandy Santosuosso, a wife and mom who lives 10 miles north of Boston, has been praying daily — and in the last few days, hourly — for a Trump win. “This can only be divine intervention, what is happening now,” she told LifeZette emphatically. “God is giving us a chance to change our course.”

A businessman from Worcester, Massachusetts, blamed arrogance and two failed administrations for what ultimately felled the Clinton campaign.

“Obama was out there campaigning — not for her, but for his own legacy,” he said. “What a mistake, and incredibly self-serving. And the mainstream media? They didn’t see this coming.”

Twitter was exploding with emotional tweets — shocked and angry Clinton supporters, and joyous Trump voters. They also began illuminating what the election has revealed about the problems with current Democratic leadership.

Twitter user Linda Suhler tweeted, “Who could have possibly known that LISTENING to the American people was the key? Donald J. Trump did.”

“Who could have possibly known that LISTENING to the American people was the key?” one social media user tweeted. “Donald J. Trump did.”

Another tweeted, “Wow. Waking up to @BBCRadio4 reporting from democrat-HQ; it sounds like a morgue and supporters are crying. Quite Extraordinary.”

Pennsylvania Archbishop Council Nedd also believed the election had lessons. “While both candidates were severely flawed, Trump tapped into something visceral at the core of many disenfranchised working-class Americans,” he said. “I’ve been saying this — there were those who voted for Trump who never told a soul, and that’s OK. That’s why voting booths have curtains.”

Some used humor to deal with the evening’s drama.

“To all the people saying they’re moving out of the US if ‘X’ happens: Sit your silly a** down, you barely leave your house now,” tweeted one user.

“This is unbelievable — I am just ecstatic,” said the Hampton, Iowa, resident who initially was too nervous to watch election results. “I am having a celebratory toast over the phone with a friend — who is taking tomorrow off from work, he’s so excited. This is actually happening!”

One man on Twitter was on pins and needles throughout the long night.

“Such an intense evening, this is killing me!!!” he tweeted. Of course, he had skin in the game — that was tweeted by Don Trump Jr., the son of the man who will be the nation’s 45th president.
