A Teacher’s Very Biased Middle School Assignment

In seventh grade, middle school students in the Peach Tree State are required to learn about Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, as mandated by Georgia’s Department of Education.

“Seventh grade is the second year of a two-year World Area Studies course. Seventh grade students study Africa and Asia. The goal of this two-year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live,” reads a section highlighting the state of Georgia’s academic standards.

But some educators are choosing instead to turn their classrooms into echo chambers for today’s left-leaning causes.

Corey Sanders, a social studies teacher at Hampton Middle School in Henry County, Georgia, tasked his students with writing letters persuading Congress to support gun control, according to a recent report in Blue Lives matter, a publication for and by law enforcement.

Based in Ranson, West Virginia, Blue Lives Matter obtained a copy of the assignment from police Officer William Lee, whose son is a student in Sanders’ class. Lee also told Blue Lives Matter that Sanders is not the only teacher at Hampton Middle School incorporating political agendas into teaching.

“For this assignment, you are writing a letter to the lawmakers of the United States. The purpose of this letter is to have stricter gun laws in the United States. Your letter should contain at least five complete sentences. Make sure that you use proper grammatical skills when writing your letter,” says Sanders’ guidance to students.

The controversy surrounding the letter-writing project comes in the wake of the recent March for Our Lives events across the country. The demonstrations in support of tighter gun controls took place not just in Washington, D.C., but in scores of other cities nationwide and across the globe as well.

The mainstream media gave widespread and favorable coverage of the demonstrations — but have had little if any coverage of those who stood firmly in favor of Second Amendment rights.

“It should concern us that an underlying objective of the March for Our Lives event was to advance the far Left’s agenda to disarm every American who isn’t part of the federal government or local law enforcement,” wrote Michael Anthony, the author of “A Call for Courage: Living with Power, Truth, and Love In An Age of Intolerance and Fear,” in a recent LifeZette op-ed.

LifeZette reached out to Hampton Middle School Principal Purvis Jackson about whether or not Sanders will face disciplinary action for deviating from the state’s academic standards, but did not hear back by the time of publication.

LifeZette also left a message for Sanders at the school but did not receive a return call.

Officer William Lee was none too pleased about the homework assignment his son was given. After he went online and reviewed the assignment, he told his son, “No, you’re not doing that assignment,” Lee told Blue Lives Matter, as The College Fix noted in an article on the topic. “Then I emailed his teacher the next day and told him that my son would not be writing that.”

“There’s nothing in the course curriculum about gun control.

The instructor responded he was fine with that — “and that he wouldn’t mark off” the student for not completing the assignment.

As William Lee told Blue Lives Matter, “I’d like to know how this fits into my son’s actual curriculum. The Georgia Standard of Excellence … says that my seventh-grader is supposed to be studying Asia, Africa and Middle East in social studies. There’s nothing in the course curriculum about gun control.”
