That this item earned any success at all speaks to the power and mystique of marketing — and also to the gullibility of buyers. Conceived in 1975 by ad exec Gary Dahl, the pet rock was nothing more than a smooth stone gathered from Mexico’s Rosarito Beach. The rocks were promoted as actual pets, however, wrapped in straw and packaged in cardboard boxes complete with “breathing holes.” The fad was short-lived; pet rocks were sold for about six months, enough time to turn Dahl into a stone-cold millionaire.
