Many of us still remember the jingle: “It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, for fun it’s the best of the toys, it’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, the favorite of girls and boys.” Richard James, a naval engineer, invented the toy by accident while toiling in a Philadelphia shipyard in 1943, developing springs to stabilize sensitive instruments for ships — the nation was in the throes of World War II. As fate would have it, two years later the toy debuted at Gimbels, and 400 Slinky toys sold immediately. Throughout his lifetime, James earned a whopping $250 million from the Slinky — not a bad rate of return considering his initial $500 bank loan.
