Nothing warms the heart of a parent who has just written a giant tuition check like trouble with the police over binge drinking. Parties like a recent one at the University of Delaware endanger everyone involved — and can so easily lead to tragedy.

Police broke up a house party this past Saturday afternoon at the university, which is based in Newark, Delaware — and made 180 underage alcohol consumption arrests, according to Delawareonline.com.

Just last spring, Willem Golden, a student from Skidmore College, was staying at another unofficial fraternity house near the UD campus when he fell from a roof to his death.

Newark officers descended on the small brick house Saturday, where some 200 people were milling about the yard. Two portable toilets were on site, as well as a few tables from which tickets to the “unofficial frat” party were sold, multiple local outlets reported. The unsanctioned fraternity is called the APES, according to Delaware police.

One mom from New England whose son is a sophomore at the University of Delaware told LifeZette, “As parents, we know that parties are a part of fraternity life. You hope your son shows good judgment and we are very relieved to hear he wasn’t at the event that ended up with police intervention.”

A party of that size isn’t unusual, according to neighbors — some of whom are students.

“It was just a normal ‘day-drink,'” Tommy Flynn, 21, a student who lives next door to the house that had the party, told Delawareonline.com.

APES was started by members of the former Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, Andrea Boyle Tippett, a spokeswoman for UD, told Delawareonline.com. The Alpha Epsilon Pi UD chapter was suspended for hazing violations in April.

The names of the party’s hosts haven’t been revealed by police, but the hosts are likely to face additional charges, according to a statement from Newark police lieutenant Bill Hargrove.

One person was found unresponsive inside the house on Saturday and was taken to Christiana Hospital via ambulance and treated for alcohol overdose, Delawareonline.com reported. The person was released, according to police.

All people arrested who are UD students were referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

“You hope that a strong message is sent to the students, and that they learn something from this event,” said the concerned UD sophomore student’s mother.
