March 14th is Pi Day … get it? 3.14?

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. For any circle, if you divide its circumference by its diameter, you will get 3.14159, a number that is known as pi.

But enough of the math lesson! Let’s leave all that arithmetic to the kids. On Pi Day, we’re noting the most important circles families have in their lives.

1.) “My wedding ring is our commitment to one another. I’ve been wearing it for 30 years and look forward to the next 30,” said a mother of two in Richmond, Virginia.

2.) When a baby is screaming and fussy, there are no better circles for a mom than a frozen teething ring!

3.) On a lazy Sunday morning after a hectic week, there is something magical about catching up with the family over a pile of beautiful round, delicious pancakes.

4.) Gathering ’round the dinner table is one ritual a mother in Ohio cherishes. She emphasizes, “No cell phones allowed.”

5.) While at dinner, a Springfield, Virginia, mom cherishes the circle her family makes to hold hands and pray every night.

6.) A wine glass or goblet is a beloved item for some parents as they relax and reflect at the end of the day while sipping their favorite adult beverage.

7.) The cylinder shapes on a brand new washer and dryer mean parents don’t have to lug their child to the local Laundromat to wash the family’s clothes.

8.) “Watching the kids run circles around the house playing tag and laughing” is a preferred activity for a mother of three in Tampa, Florida.

9.) The circle of friends works for a mom whose dear pal drops off beef stew when she’s 9 months pregnant and chasing after a toddler. It works for a mom when other parents watch her baby when she has to take her older child to the ER. And it works for the mom whose friends take her out for a night on the town after a hard week.

10.) For many parents, the most blessed dinner after a long day is … a big, round pizza pie.

For some, circles have multiple meanings.

A mom of two in Arlington, Virginia, favors pie for dessert. She loves it so much she’s opening a shop called “Livin’ the Pie Life.” She started the business with another mom as a way to balance work and family. But it’s so much more to her and her daughters.

“Pie is a way to pass along a family tradition. To me, pie means filling a need, doing something well and expanding my horizons,” said Heather Sheire. “To my daughters, pie probably means Mom is really busy, so don’t bother her. However, they talk with pride about the business. I ask their opinion about flavors and design and they appreciate being part of it.”

Her current favorite flavor is “Mile High Chocolate Pie.” Her best seller: apple.

For many, wheels are integral to living: the wheels on a wheelchair, the tires on a bike, that jogging stroller that helps a stressed mom go for a run with babies in tow. For one uncle in Columbus, Ohio, “it’s the steering wheel. Virtually every day I drive, and that steering wheel takes me where I need to go, and sometimes where I want to go.”

A father of three, a D.C. native, says the most important thing in his life is his family circle. “The trust and comfort and stability that come with it defines me.”
