In deference to a small minority of children who identify as “non-binary,” some radical language changes are occurring at schools and summer camps across the nation.

In the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) of North Carolina, a recent presentation to principals and counselors that abuses the original intent of both Title IX and “bullying prevention” recommended that children not be identified as boys and girls — but instead as scholars and students, according to a report from North Carolina TV station WSOC.

This is ironic, since gender is the focus of the change — not education.

The aggressive CMS public school guidelines clearly state their mission is to “maximize academic achievement for every child.” They also state in their presentation that students must have “safe, welcoming schools that support social-emotional well-being for every child,” and promise they will “model dignity and respect for every child.”

Except, of course — the children made uncomfortable or confused by the pointless, nonsensical changes, which are supported by well-funded LGBT groups like PFLAG (formerly known as Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and the Human Rights Campaign.

“We have done a lot of research on this issue, and we believe it’s absurd for Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools to be inserting a social agenda into what should be a focus on education for North Carolina children,” Demi Dowdy, communications coordinator for the conservative Civitas Institute in Raleigh, North Carolina, told LifeZette. “It’s a distraction from teaching, and a misuse of government funds to promote an agenda that the majority of North Carolinians don’t agree with.”

The CMS bullying prevention guidelines also say students can participate in after-school and extracurricular activities based on their gender identity — including overnight field trips. So a boy can attend an “all-girls” overnight trip if he identifies as a girl.

Another recommendation is to avoid lining up students by a boy-girl-boy format.

Meanwhile, change for change’s sake continues up the East Coast. Though usually concerned with canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, and s’mores around the campfire, a network of Jewish camps is busy re-making the language of Hebrew to suit a small group of transgender campers.

At the Habonim Dror Camp Moshava in Street, Maryland, children traditionally jump on tables and chairs in the camp dining hall to scream their age in group cheer, according to The Washington Post. But “those cheers have had to be rewritten this summer to fit the new gender-neutral Hebrew. Plural masculine nouns in Hebrew — including any group of people that includes at least one man — typically end in ‘im,’ while feminine nouns end in ‘ot.'”

At Camp Moshava, all groups of both boys and girls now end in gender-neutral “imot.”

The Nitzavim group at the camp had previously chanted the signature line of the famous activist, writer, and Zionist leader Theodor Herzl: “We are the Nitzavim! If you will it, it is no dream!” as The Post reported.

Now Herzl’s words have been altered by the new language rules to rhyme as “We are the Nitzavimot! If you will it, it is no dreamboat!”

Clearly something important gets lost in translation. “Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t say I have a dreamboat — he said, ‘I have a dream,'” said one Boston dad of three. “It’s a disservice to these kids that their own history will be passed down incorrectly due to the will of one or two confused campers.”

In North Carolina, the new PC school guidelines say all district schools must evaluate every gender-based activity and “maintain only those that have clear and sound pedagogical purpose,” as originally reported by ABC11 news station.

Again, the hypocrisy of these guidelines is clear. Pedagogical purpose is exactly what these district schools will be getting away from — in strict adherence to the new rules presented under the guise of keeping kids safe.

Another recommendation is to avoid lining up students by a boy-girl-boy format, instead using an alphabetical, birth month or even, incredibly, a favorite color system.

The North Carolina Values Coalition calls the rules radical and a violation of privacy, according to ABC11. Dowdy of the Civitas Institute sees focused radical activism increasing in a state that is attracting businesses within its borders.

“Our conservative legislators have given us a thriving economy and a state that is growing by leaps and bounds,” said Dowdy. “We’ve got a target on our backs right now. A conservative state is what North Carolinians actually want.”

“The ones who really get hurt are the kids,” said one dad.

At the Jewish camp in Maryland, the focus seems to be more on political correctness than on actual camping.

“It reinforces the impact of summer camp as a safe space,” Sara Zebovitz, the North America director for Habonim Dror, a youth group based in Israel, told The Post of the language changes. “Camp has always made it OK to say, ‘I can be myself here.'”

Zebovitz said the topic of gendered language in Hebrew came up at a conference for Jewish camps, and said none of about 50 other camps had found an issue with the language.

Some camp alumni have criticized Habonim Dror’s new language, reported The Post.

A camper named Zev used male pronouns for six summers at camp before coming out as “non-binary” this year. “People are accepting,” Zev told The Post. Zev had one caveat: “They really suck at remembering and using my correct pronouns all the time.”

Zev is lodged in a boys’ tent this summer, but has talked about living in an all-gender tent in the future, said The Post.

The Boston dad sighed when hearing of the camp’s new policies. “The ones who really get hurt are the kids,” he said. “What will they do in the real world that doesn’t bend to their every desire?”
