A study by Austrian researchers is suggesting that if you like your coffee black, your personality may be dark, too. You may even have some sadistic traits.

This goes for bitter foods as well. People who like those foods may be a bit psychopathic — or at the very least, vain and selfish.

A Dunkin’ Donuts employee outside Boston, Massachusetts, said of those who don’t take cream or sugar: “People who order black (coffee) seem like they need the caffeine jolt more than most, from what I can tell from the drive-thru window. So are black coffee lovers at least grumpier? Maybe.”

She laughed, adding, “Everyone in line seems psycho if they have to wait more than two minutes for their order!”

The first experiment conducted by the Innsbruck University involved about 500 people whose average age was 35. They were asked to rate their food preferences, then complete four personality tests.

“Everyone in line seems psycho if they have to wait more than two minutes for their order!”

The tests checked aggression levels, asking the subjects to assess statements such as: “Given enough provocation, I may hit someone,” according to rt.com.

More specific personality traits were also explored (“I tend to be callous or insensitive”), in particular extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability.

And while it might be scary in and of itself that there is a need for a test called the “Comprehensive Assessment of Sadistic Tendencies,” the results suggested a link between bitter tastes and a darker mindset.

“The results suggest that how much people like bitter-tasting foods and drinks is stably tied to how dark their personality is,” the study reported.

The researchers concluded that “bitter taste preferences are linked to malevolent personality traits.”

And most eye-opening: “We found particularly robust correlations with everyday sadism … (which is) a construct related to benign masochism — the enjoyment of painful activities,” the researchers shared in their findings.

So why do the psychopathic personalities like bitter foods?

Christina Sagioglou, the study’s author, said eating bitter foods may be “compared to a rollercoaster ride where people enjoy things that induce fear.”

“I subconsciously think that those who drink black coffee are more direct, more businesslike, and more disciplined,” one Boston mom told LifeZette. “But a psychopath? That’s a stretch. I myself am crazy without my coffee first thing in the morning.”
