To become more productive, we might all take a nap.

Monday — the day after the return of daylight saving time — was National Napping Day, which was originally meant to give us an opportunity to catch up on that hour we lost. But while we continue to crack jokes about making time for a nap, we rarely ever take one despite the serious reasons to consider a quick afternoon snooze.

Studies show that sleep deprivation can cost us in productivity, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke — and a higher risk of mortality. Our chronic state of sleep deprivation also costs businesses close to 1.2 million working days a year and saps our economy of some 2.28 percent of our GDP, according to a RAND Corporation study last November.

It’s why tech companies like Uber, Google, Zappos, PwC, and AOL have made corporate-sanctioned nap rooms a priority, as the International Business Times reported. Ben & Jerry’s has them, too. Schools are even buying into the growing business of napping —check out the video above!

That short afternoon break can really make a difference in our day.

But just in case the boss isn’t buying it, let him or her know you’re working on your productivity while your face is planted firmly on your desk. Twenty minutes, research shows, may be all it takes for you to feel more alert, be more productive, and be in a better mood. (Your coworkers will likely thank you for it.)
