A social media firestorm has surrounded actress Lindsay Lohan of late. Some people are claiming she’s converted to Islam, although her own mother says she has not.

After famously facing drugs and alcohol and recently stepping away from an abusive relationship, Lohan has reportedly been recovering and attempting to heal.

“My very close friends in London are Saudi, and they gave me the Quran,” said Lohan.

Over the weekend, the star deleted her entire Instagram account, leaving a simple Arabic phrase as her bio: “Alaikum salam,” which means, “And unto you peace.”

Many on social media took this phrase to mean Lohan converted to Islam and many Muslim users enthusiastically congratulated the actress, welcoming her to the faith. Lohan was spotted back in April 2015 carrying a Quran, and she traveled to Turkey this past October to visit the refugees there.

When asked about the Quran during an interview at that time with the Turkish TV network Haberturk, Lohan said, “My very close friends, who have been there for me a lot, in London are Saudi and they gave me the Quran, and I brought it to New York because I was learning.”

“It opened doors for me to experience spiritually, to find another true meaning. This is who I am,” Lohan also said.

For now, at least, it appears she might just be “taking a break from social media,” according to Gossip Cop. Her own mother, Dina Lohan, confirmed to the site that she has not converted, and a representative for the actress told Gossip Cop that Lohan “has not converted [to Islam].”
