Trusting God in Tragedy

There are no words to describe the pain that comes with the loss of a child — but that is what country singer Craig Morgan and his wife, Karen, have attempted to do.

The Morgans’ 19-year-old son, Jerry Greer, passed away in a freak boating accident last Monday in the northwest part of Tennessee. His body was pulled from Kentucky Lake hours after he went missing. He was wearing a life jacket.

The teenager had recently graduated from high school and was planning to attend Marshall College and play football there.

On Thursday, Morgan broke his silence, taking to Instagram to share thoughts about his late son.

“The loss of our son Jerry is the hardest thing we have ever had to endure as a family. Karen and I are so grateful for all of the wonderful people who have shown us unwavering support during this difficult time,” he wrote. “There are too many to name here, but we are especially thankful for the Humphreys County Sheriff and Fire Departments, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and all the additional agencies and volunteers who turned out to bring our son home.”

“We would also like to thank our friends, family members, and Jerry’s friends who have all shown us an immense amount of love and support,” Morgan continued. “Additionally, we cannot thank the music and outdoor communities enough for wrapping their arms around us, as well as our industry friends, fans, and all those that loved our son.”

But as many people who go through a tragedy like this know, Morgan and his family are turning to their faith for comfort during overwhelming grief.

“We are blessed by the outpouring of prayers and condolences from across the world. Jerry may be gone from this earth, and we will miss him every day, but his spirit will live on in our hearts. We will find peace knowing that God has a bigger plan, and that one day, we’ll be reunited with him again in Heaven.”

At the end of that post, Morgan cited John 3:16, which states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

But the faith and trust in God’s love is perhaps the most profound aspect of this post. Morgan’s faith in God’s plan for his life and his family’s future is profoundly inspiring — particularly in the wake of this tragedy.
