On this crucial first day in office for the Trump administration, a key issue — the respect for life in all its forms — was front and center.

One of the three presidential executive orders on Monday morning concerned reinstating the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits federal funds from going to international abortion providers. A Marist-Knights of Columbus poll was released today that confirmed 8-in-10 Americans agree with this policy being reinstalled.

“The president — it’s no secret — has made it very clear he is a pro-life president.”

In White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s first official press conference on Monday afternoon, reporters asked him multiple times about the administration’s decision to prioritize pro-life policy.

“The president — it’s no secret — has made it very clear he is a pro-life president,” said Spicer, responding to the first question on the subject. “He wants to stand up for all Americans, including the unborn, and I think the reinstatement of this policy is not just something that echoes that value but respects taxpayer funding as well.”

He added, “We’re standing up not just for life, for [the] life of the unborn, but also for taxpayer funds that are being spent overseas to perform an action that is contrary to the values of this president, and I think continue to illustrate not to just the folks of this country but those around the world what a value we place on life.”

The press secretary was asked again about the issue and reiterated, with clarity and authority, the focus of the Trump administration to defend the unborn.

“He is going to stand up and value life, born or unborn, the same as he said throughout the last year and a half that he’s going to stand up and protect life, promote it and instill policies that promote life, that promote adoption, that help support young women, that help support funding of agencies and clinics that support women’s health.”

A pro-life agenda is clearly in the forefront of Trump’s mind — a telling sign ahead of his announcement of a nominee for the Supreme Court, which Trump and the White House have made clear will come in the next couple weeks.
