President Donald Trump is getting right down to business on Monday, reinstating the Mexico City Policy — prohibiting foreign federal funds from going to groups that promote or perform abortions.

This policy originated with Ronald Reagan’s administration and effectively stops federal funds from going to the International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International (abortion providers around the globe). This decision comes a day after the 44th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and a few days before the March for Life in Washington.

“President Trump is continuing Ronald Reagan’s legacy by taking immediate action on day one to stop the promotion of abortion through our tax dollars overseas.”

This executive order is one of the first decisions Trump has made as president — sending a clear message he will be prioritizing respect for the life of the unborn during his presidency.

“President Trump is continuing Ronald Reagan’s legacy by taking immediate action on Day One to stop the promotion of abortion through our tax dollars overseas,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser in a statement. “President Trump’s immediate action to promote respect for all human life, including vulnerable unborn children abroad, as well as conscience rights, sends a strong signal about his administration’s pro-life priorities.”

The reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy is a step in the direction of having a total defunding of Planned Parenthood — a policy goal that has been a clear priority of this new administration and Republican leadership on Capitol Hill.

For conservatives who worried about Trump’s commitment to the issue, such a strong statement just three days after his inauguration is a reassuring move.
