Family is the foundation of the American lifestyle — and liberty comes from the creator, the president of the United States said in a speech Thursday.

“I have one goal as president: to fight for the American people and to fight for America and America first,” President Donald Trump said Thursday at a June 8 pro-family values event in Washington, D.C.

Trump spoke at an event held by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a conservative religious group.

“Faith inspires us to be better, to be stronger, to be more caring and giving and more determined to act in selfless and courageous defense of what is good and what is right,” Trump said. “It is time to put a stop to the attacks on religion.”

During the same hour as Trump’s speech, former FBI Director James Comey was testifying on Capitol Hill. Trump fired Comey last month.

“No federal worker should be censoring sermons or targeting pastors,” Trump said at the event. “As long as I’m president, no one is going to stop you from practicing your faith or from preaching what is in your heart.”

Trump spoke during the event’s “Road to Majority” legislative lunch.

“We want our pastors speaking out … and we want our children to know the blessings of God,” Trump said. “Schools should not be a place that drives out faith and religion, but … should welcome faith and religion with wide open, beautiful arms.”

In May, Trump signed a religious-freedom executive order.

Trump voiced his support for evangelicals in America and the First Amendment right of all Americans to “live by the teachings of their faith.”

“Our rights are given to us by a divine authority, and no earthly force can ever take those rights away,” Trump said.

“It’s truly an honor for us to host so many incredible and impactful leaders at this year’s conference,” Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, wrote in a Facebook post before the event. “Our confirmed speakers in next week’s lineup include Kellyanne Conway, Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Eric Metaxas, Ken Cuccinelli, Rep. Ann Wagner, Speaker [Paul] Ryan and many more!”

Other speakers for the three-day event on June 8 through June 10 include House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Sen. Joni Ernst, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

“All are raising their conservative voices to address the faith community and our role in driving political change,” Head wrote on Facebook. “We’ll be discussing topics like digital activism, justice reform, free speech on college campuses, human trafficking, and many others.”

“And above all else, we know this: In America, we don’t worship government. We worship God,” Trump said Thursday.
