This presidential race has been one of the most frustrating, confusing, and even frightening ones of the past 50 years. Families argue. Friends go separate ways. Children call their parents ignorant and bigoted — or vice versa. Everyone has an opinion about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. And a strong one at that. But there is one sentiment surfacing that is important to fight: fear.

I’ll admit, there are days when I fear for my kids. What will the country be like if horrible Supreme Court justices are appointed? Will babies die, schools close, or the country end up bankrupt? We may end up watching more innocent Americans die at the hands of ISIS thugs and the U.S. economy collapse.

There is madness in our country. Vogue magazine gave the “Woman of the Year” award to a person who has male genitalia. The Little Sisters of the Poor were taken to the highest court in the land to decide whether or not they have the right to refuse to give birth control pills to fellow workers because of religious and moral convictions. And we are a country founded on religious freedom.

There is a lot at stake in November — but we must not live in fear.

This is a time in history to dig deeper into our beliefs, our faith, and ideologies. Who are we and what are our lives really about? If we conclude that our happiness and well-being resides in the hands of two presidential candidates, we’re in trouble. But they aren’t, thank the Lord — God is. We must remember this. In fact, life now in many ways resembles life for many described in the Bible. People back then kicked God out of temples and public places. They refused to hold to any moral standards. Some worshiped crazy statues and had sex with prostitutes as a way of worshiping those gods. Life was out of control.

What happened? God showed up. Throughout history we see repetitious cycles of human behavior. Unfortunately, we’re in a downward spiral now. It does feel scary — but our experience isn’t new to God. He’s seen this all before. So how do we keep fear away?

Tell God what you’re worried about and what you need. Then do it again.

First, we need to understand that Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will have limited power. We will survive. Second, we must shift our perspectives and see a bigger picture. We need to view the world a little more as God does, because it is only then that we can feel some relief. For instance, Paul writes in a heartfelt letter to the good folks in Philippi to do something very specific when anxiety took hold over them.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Telling us not to be anxious is a tall order. But we can do it because he explains how we can. Be thankful; tell God what you’re worried about and what you need. Then do it again and again.

I am all too familiar with anxiety and I’ll admit that getting rid of it isn’t easy. But here’s what I do know. The best way to leave it behind is to stand back and face the reality that neither Trump nor Hillary holds the power to make or break us — only God has that kind of power. Furthermore, if we choose to give God a chance, we can follow Paul’s suggestion and give Him our worry every time we feel it. Every time.

And when we do, he says, be thankful. Focus on what we do have today. See the goodness right in our midst and say “thank you” to God. Then, he says, we will experience a peace in the center or our being.

I don’t know about you, but pursuing a worldview with a different lens than that revealed by news anchors or our friends and colleagues seems a whole lot more sane. And it’s reasonable. Most of you reading this believe in God. I know you do because national studies and polls tell me. So go deeper. Find your faith again. Challenge yourself to think beyond November, Supreme Court appointees, or even ISIS.

The only way that we will survive this kind of chaos is by putting our trust in the mighty and loving hands of God, just as our founders did.
