The New York Mets major-league baseball team has promoted the iconic Christian athlete Tim Tebow up the ranks in the minor leagues, the Mets announced this week.

Tebow, a former professional football player, made a name for himself by taking a knee to pray on the football field at games. Last year, the retired quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner ended his football career and jumped over to professional baseball.

The inspirational 29-year-old tries to “play hard every day,” Tebow said.

“Be kind. Be compassionate. Be generous. And know that God loves you!” Tebow tweeted on June 25.

Tebow will join the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday, June 27. Earlier this season he joined the Columbia Fireflies, the lower A-ball affiliate of the Mets. The St. Lucie Mets, based in Port St. Lucie, Florida, is the higher class A-team.

Tebow is “slated to play in St. Lucie’s next game on Tuesday at First Data Field,” the minor-league Mets team announced Sunday. “First pitch vs. the Palm Beach Cardinals is 6:30 p.m.”

“The last few weeks have gone well for Tebow, and the Mets feel this is the right time for the promotion,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson in a media release.

The Mets signed Tebow onto a minor-league contract last September.

“After working through instructional league, the Arizona Fall League and spring training, Tebow was assigned to the low-A Fireflies to start the 2017 minor league season,” according to a release from the St. Lucie Mets. “Through Saturday night, Tebow played in 63 games with Columbia. He batted .222 with 14 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBI.”

In Tebow’s first at-bat with the Fireflies, he hit a two-run homer.

“Of course I want to succeed in baseball,” Tebow told People magazine back in November, “but it doesn’t mean anything if I’m not ultimately doing something greater than myself. Our lives should be about bringing faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.”

“When we love Jesus, if we love people, we’re going to make a difference. We’re going to make an impact,” Tebow said in July 2016 at a large Christian gathering on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The motivational athlete tweeted a Bible verse earlier this month: “Trust in him at all times, O people; Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8.”

The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association named Tebow’s book, “Shaken,” the 2017 Christian Book of the Year. Tebow just released his new book, “Know Who You Are. Live Like It Matters.: A Homeschooler’s Interactive Guide to Discovering Your True Identity” in May 2017.
