Hear What This Pro-Choice Actress Said About Her Abortion?

In typical Hollywood fashion, a pro-choice actress has claimed her views on abortion and Christianity go hand in hand — suggesting the pro-life crowd has “stolen” the Christian identity.

Actress Amy Brenneman, star of the HBO show “The Leftovers,” describes her church’s philosophy on the “moral agency of women” as a mother’s right to keep or kill her baby — or to “decide what’s right for her fetus,” in Brenneman’s words.

“In my church, we are prayerfully pro-choice, which means that we believe in the moral agency of women,” Brenneman, 52, said in a video created by the “Lives of Women” series. “I think a woman’s moral agency means that she has autonomy over herself to decide what is right for her body and decide what’s right for her fetus.”

After becoming pregnant in college, Brenneman had an abortion at age 21. She has publicly detailed her abortion and claims to have no regrets about ending the pregnancy.

“I’d actually been public about having had an abortion about 10 years ago, but that was pre-social media,” Brenneman said in the minute-long video. “Now, in the age of Twitter and Facebook, I was trolled pretty viciously.”

“Lives of Women” — a project of Indigenous Media — shares the stories of women such as Brenneman on its Facebook page.

Incredibly, Brenneman also said abortion is a “necessary component of responsible family planning.” She wrote that in aFebruary 2016 Cosmopolitan article.

“Afterward, I breathed a huge sigh of relief and thought to myself, I get my life back!” Brenneman wrote of her abortion. “I was grateful that I lived in a country where forced birth was not the law of the land and where motherhood was not a lifelong consequence for a contraception slip.”

Decades after the procedure, she said her abortion was “uneventful” and “left no scars.”

“I absolutely think the term ‘Christian’ has been stolen in 2017 in America by the ‘Christian right,'” Brenneman said in the “Lives of Women” video.

Brenneman said pro-life people “hate” her — which is particularly harsh criticism of a very large group.

In many Christian circles, protecting the lives of unborn babies is heavily valued. Life is precious, and children are gifts from God.

“It’s hard not to ask ‘what if’ in the actress’s situation,” Micaiah Bilger, a staff writer for LifeNews.com, noted in an op-ed. “What if, instead of the abortion-supporting church, Brenneman had found a pro-life church that welcomed her and told her that, though aborting her unborn child was wrong, she is loved and can be healed and forgiven?”
