In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” One Colorado baker did just that, and on Monday Christians celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court decision’s affirmation of religious liberty.

In allowing one evangelical shop owner the right to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, the court delivered a much-needed injection of hope for business owners, Christians — and voters.

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to affirm baker Jack Phillips’ religious right not to participate in a gay wedding is the most significant example of ‘promise made, promised fulfilled’ by President Trump to evangelical Christians, and will guarantee their support in 2020,” Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Dallas, said in a statement provided to LifeZette.

“Evangelicals voted for Trump by the largest margin in history in 2016 primarily because of his promise to protect religious liberty, which is under constant attack, and to appoint conservative Supreme Court justices and federal judges,” Jeffress continued. “Today’s court decision will energize even more conservative Christians to rally around him in 2020.”

Georgia’s Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle tweeted that people should “unite behind this decision” because “allowing Americans to practice their faith is not discrimination.”

The court “correctly rule[d] in favor of religious freedom,” and America should never be “a place where people are forced to provide a service against their deeply held religious beliefs,” conservative activist Charlie Kirk, of Turning Point USA, noted.

Meanwhile, Franklin Graham tweeted, “We thank God for answered prayer! Today the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker who refused to create a wedding cake for a same-sex marriage ceremony. This is a huge win for religious freedom!”

The nation’s high court felt the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) considered this case with bias against Phillips.

“This case was an egregious violation of religious liberty, and it should have been thrown out long before it reached the Supreme Court,” said Jeffress in his statement. “As the court itself noted at the very beginning of Phillips’ legal ordeal, ‘some of the commissioners at the … formal, public hearings endorsed the view that religious beliefs cannot legitimately be carried into the public sphere or commercial domain, disparaged Phillips’ faith as despicable and characterized it as merely rhetorical, and compared his invocation of his sincerely held religious beliefs to defenses of slavery and the Holocaust. No commissioners objected to the comments.'”

While Monday’s decision is a victory for Christians, there is, of course, more work to be done.

“That the case went this far is ample evidence that the need for conservative judges and elected officials at all levels is greater than ever,” said Jeffress, “and why support of our president is more critical than ever.”

Christians can feel heartened that their efforts on behalf of their faith will bear fruit — both on earth and in heaven. Philippians 1:27 in the Bible reminds the faithful: “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”
