When churches try to court and invigorate youth to take part in the community, sometimes the attempt doesn’t quite work.

The Archdiocese of Trenton in New Jersey posted a video meant to invite young Catholics to the Youth Conference. It had the bishop and two priests doing carpool karaoke to current pop music.

“Bishop David M. O’Connell C.M., Fr. Sebastian Maria Kajko CFR, and Fr. Martin O’Reilly Chaplain of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Trenton come together to invite all young people to the Diocesan Youth Conference (DYC) 2017! Join us March 4th at St. Gregory the Great in Hamilton, NJ,” read the description of the video posted to YouTube Tuesday.

The three clerics sang to Alessia Cara’s hit “Scars to Your Beautiful,” Justin Timberlake’s “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING,” and Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud.” They interspersed the karaoke with mini-sermons on a variety of topics.

Stunts like this are becoming more common — other priests have made similar videos in an attempt to bring young people back to church and to youth-based faith events.
