Sen. Thune, while speaking on the Senate floor, listed acts of good that came up after the evil event: “The officers who risked their lives to defend those at the scene, the colleagues who hurried to provide medical care to Steve Scalise, the Alexandria Police officers who came running to help,” Thune went on. “The Democrat congressional baseball team who united in prayer for their colleagues, the injured officer who went to check on the member he was protecting before he thought seeking treatment for himself.”

“These are the things that endure,” Thune said. “Good endures. Sacrifice endures. Heroism endures.”

As Thune referenced, when members of the Democratic baseball team — also at a practice for Thursday night’s game — learned of the shooting, members gathered in prayer.

“My House Democrat colleagues and I are saying a prayer for our House Republicans and Senate GOP baseball colleagues after hearing about this morning’s horrific shooting at their practice field,” Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen (D-Nev.) wrote Wednesday on his Facebook page.

“We are not one caucus or the other in the House today,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said. “It’s an injury in the family.”

As another Democratic representative noted on Twitter, the baseball game is still on.

“We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country,” Trump stated.

The annual baseball game, which is held at the Washington Nationals Park, supports such charity organizations as The Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation. The Capitol Police Memorial Fund — added in light of the shooting — will also benefit from the game this year.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

“For all the noise and fury, we are a family,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a floor statement Wednesday.

“So before this House returns to its business, I want us to slow down and reflect, to think about how we are being tested right now. Because we are,” Ryan said. “I ask each of you to join me in resolving to come together … to lift each other up … and to show the country — show the world — that we are one House. The people’s House — united in our humanity.”

“It is that humanity which will win the day,” Ryan added. [lz_pagination]
