Afghan President Ghani has fled the country, press and US intelligence have confirmed. “That’s it. It’s over,” a U.S. official said.

He’s right. The game is hours away from ending. The president of the United States, tucked away from the action at Camp David, is issuing empty threads that are being laughed at in every chancery on the planet. The US Secretary of State is insisting, “this is not Saigon.” But the reality on the ground calls him a liar.

The Taliban are claiming they will enter Kabul peacefully. But so far they have left a trail of revenge, rape, and pillage across Afghanistan. They have waited twenty years for this reckoning. Now, they will have it with ferocious barbarity.

As we led off, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has left the nation, destination as yet unknown. This is a traditional move. Before him Batista, Somoza, the Shah of Iran, Amin, and many other recently unemployed national bosses have booked at the end of their regime, some with the national treasury or stacks of gold bars following close behind them. They leave their people to murder and mayhem.

The militants have seized territory at an alarming rate while Afghan government troops and their allied militias fail to put up an effective resistance – surrendering at times without even putting up a fight.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul said Wednesday that it was receiving reports that Taliban members were executing surrendering Afghan troops and unlawfully detaining some members of the government, including military leaders, provincial officials and police officers.

A report from the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission on civilian casualties in the country during the first six months of 2021 found that 1,677 were killed and another 3,644 wounded by the end of June. That’s an 80% increase over the same period in 2020, according to the report, and ‘the bloodiest six months for Afghan civilians since AIHRC started documenting.’ ” Such is Afghanistan on a sweltering American summer Sunday. Over the next day or so, it’s going to get much hotter in Kabul.
