We have heard it throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, that even as we deal with the initial onslaught of the virus, a second wave could be on the horizon. And while such news is less than ideal, the concern in the eyes of many is how that will affect the economy and everyday life that America is struggling desperately to rekindle. Fortunately, President Donald Trump offered some good news on the topic.

During a visit to Michigan this week, the president offered hope on that very issue when asked about a second wave.  “People say that’s a very distinct possibility… It’s standard. And, we’re going [to] put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country.” But this wasn’t the only time he offered that encouragement this week. President Trump has told others in the media that he would not shut down the economy again should a second wave occur.

Trump made his comments at a Ford Motor Co. factory where he also encouraged those in attendance by saying, “the global pandemic proves once and for all that for America to be a strong nation, America needs to be a manufacturing nation.” He continued, “I’m fighting to bring back our jobs from China and many other countries.”

The plant where Trump offered these comments has transitioned its operations from making vehicles into producing ventilators during the pandemic, something for which he praised the workers during his appearance.

The president pulled off a surprise victory in Michigan in 2016 and will need to do so again in the November election to secure a safe path to reelection. The opportunity could be there as the traditionally blue state has become increasingly frustrated with Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s draconian rule during the pandemic, something that has garnered significant national attention.
