The Department of Justice announced that over 1,150 illegal immigrants have been charged with immigration-related crimes since the second week of June as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a federal initiative launched to enforce border security and dismantle transnational criminal organizations.

The charges were filed by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across five border districts: Arizona, Southern California, New Mexico, the Southern District of Texas, and the Western District of Texas.

According to the Department of Justice, the Southern District of Texas reported 202 border-related prosecutions.

Of those, 129 individuals were charged with illegal entry, 63 were charged with felony reentry, and 7 faced human smuggling charges.

The DOJ noted that most of the defendants in the reentry cases had prior felony convictions, including for narcotics offenses, violent crimes, and prior immigration-related violations.

One case highlighted by the DOJ involved Luis Humberto Gonzalez-Sanchez, who was arrested and charged for allegedly harboring 16 illegal immigrants at his residence.

In the Western District of Texas, federal prosecutors filed 410 cases related to border security during the same period.

In the District of Arizona, 199 individuals were charged.

Of those, 74 cases involved illegal reentry, 104 involved illegal entry, and 18 cases were filed against 20 individuals accused of alien smuggling.

The Southern District of California recorded 131 new cases, while the District of New Mexico reported 211 prosecutions for immigration and border-related violations.

The charges stem from “Operation Take Back America,” a DOJ initiative first announced in March by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The operation aims to reduce illegal immigration and disrupt criminal networks involved in drug and human trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a statement announcing the latest enforcement numbers, the DOJ reiterated the goals of the operation: “stopping illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and ending illegal trafficking of dangerous drugs and human beings.”

“Operation Take Back America” is a coordinated federal law enforcement effort involving the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Officials have stated that additional charges and arrests are expected in the coming weeks as investigations continue.

Federal prosecutors in each district are working with border patrol agents, ICE officers, and local law enforcement partners to expedite criminal cases and prioritize threats to public safety and national security.

The DOJ has stated that these enforcement actions are not only intended to hold individuals accountable for immigration violations, but also to serve as a deterrent against future unlawful border crossings.

The agency has emphasized its commitment to prosecuting individuals with prior removals and criminal convictions.

The operation continues amid broader immigration enforcement efforts under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has prioritized strengthening border security, expanding criminal prosecution of immigration offenders, and cracking down on transnational criminal organizations operating within the U.S.
