Democratic senators walked out of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday that focused on Joe Biden’s cognitive fitness, prompting Republican lawmakers to accuse their colleagues of avoiding accountability and helping conceal the president’s mental decline.

The hearing, held on Capitol Hill, was convened to examine whether individuals within the Democratic Party—including staff, family members, elected officials, and media allies—played a role in obscuring signs of cognitive deterioration by the president.

Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Peter Welch (D-VT) were the only Democrats in attendance at the start of the hearing.

Durbin, who chairs the committee, delivered opening remarks before leaving the room.

During his statement, Durbin dismissed the inquiry as politically motivated and unproductive.

“It [is] a waste of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s time,” he said.

Durbin also played a video compilation attempting to depict President Donald Trump as mentally unfit, framing the hearing as a partisan exercise.

Following Durbin’s exit, Senator Welch also made remarks criticizing the focus of the proceedings before departing the hearing himself.

“What we’re doing right now won’t help. It will not help. And I ask myself why in the world are we doing it. But we know the answer to that,” Welch said.

“Because the politics that has been embraced in this Congress is the politics of accusation, of demeaning adversaries, of deflecting from engaging in the hard discussion about hard issues and trying to come to some common agreement that’s going to be to the mutual benefit of all of the people that we represent.”

After the two Democrats exited the room, no other members of their party remained in attendance.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) addressed the absence of Democratic lawmakers during his remarks, suggesting that their refusal to engage in the hearing was a tacit admission of complicity in efforts to obscure Biden’s condition.

“I will note that few of my Democratic colleagues are here today—thank you to Senator Welch from Vermont for being here—leaving us with no other option than to take the boycotting of this hearing as an admission of guilt for their role in this crisis,” Cornyn stated.

Cornyn further alleged that a coordinated effort had taken place to conceal the president’s condition from the public.

“As we now know, there was a conspiracy to hide the president’s true condition by his family, by his staff, by the media, and many elected officials,” Cornyn said.

The hearing marks an escalation in Republican-led oversight efforts focused on concerns surrounding President Biden’s ability to fulfill the duties of the presidency.

While Democrats have repeatedly criticized these investigations as politically driven, Republicans argue that the matter is of national importance and must be addressed transparently.

The Judiciary Committee has not announced any further scheduled hearings on the topic, but Republican members indicated they would continue pressing for additional testimony and documentation related to internal communications regarding the president’s health.
