Former FBI Director James Comey is under investigation following a now-deleted social media post that federal officials say may have implied a threat against President Donald Trump.
The post, which featured a photo of beach shells arranged in a pattern spelling out “8647,” prompted backlash and concern from the Trump administration and triggered an investigation involving multiple federal agencies.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, FBI Director Kash Patel, and other administration officials have confirmed that the matter is being reviewed by the appropriate authorities.

The Secret Service has also reportedly contacted Comey as part of its own investigation into the incident.
Comey, who shared the post on Instagram, told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Monday that he regrets the “distraction” caused by the image but maintained that he had no malicious intent.
The number “86” has commonly been used in various industries to signal the removal or disposal of something, and “47” is widely associated with President Trump, who is the 47th President of the United States.
“Did you have any regret about posting the picture?” Wallace asked.

“Well I regret the distraction and the controversy around it,” Comey replied.
“But again, it’s hard to have regret about something that even in hindsight looks to me to be totally innocent.”
Comey explained that he discovered the shell arrangement with his wife during a walk on the beach.
According to Comey, his wife pointed out that “86” is commonly used in restaurants to indicate an item has been removed from the menu, while he associated the term with leaving or abandoning something.
“We stood over it and I said, ‘You know, I think it’s some sort of political message,’” Comey recalled.
“She said, ‘86, when I was a server, meant to remove an item from the menu.’ I said, ‘To me, it meant to ditch a place.’ I thought it was clever.”
Comey said he posted the image without giving it further thought, only to later learn that some online users interpreted the post as a coded call for violence against President Trump.
After hearing about the interpretation, he removed the post and issued a statement.
“I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence of any kind so I took the post down,” Comey stated.
He confirmed that the Secret Service reached out to him requesting an interview, which he agreed to.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, speaking on Fox News, called for Comey to be arrested, alleging that his post constituted a threat to the President.
Comey dismissed her comments as “ridiculous.”
“It says something more depressing about the leadership of our current administration,” Comey said.
The White House issued a statement Monday criticizing Comey and accusing him of promoting dangerous rhetoric.
“Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey, whom President Trump fired for gross incompetence and unfitness for the role, suffers from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields.
“His recent doubling down on incomprehensible and dangerous rhetoric directed at President Trump underscores his derangement and commitment to divisiveness and politics rather than loyalty to the country.”
Fields also confirmed that federal agencies are continuing to investigate the matter and will “take prompt action if warranted.”
President Trump had already faced two documented assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign cycle.
On July 13, a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing the President’s ear.
Another individual, Ryan Routh, was apprehended after allegedly attempting to gain access to Trump’s Florida golf resort in September.
The investigation into Comey’s social media activity remains ongoing.
