Kamala Harris is facing criticism after delivering a speech with what some are calling a “new accent” during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.

The event, which was part of the annual gathering of the Congressional Black Caucus, drew attention online as social media users mocked Harris for the way she addressed the crowd.

“Hello to all of my Divine Nine brothers and sisters,” Harris said, referencing the historically Black fraternities and sororities. “And to all my HBCU brothers and sisters.” Harris, a graduate of Howard University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, one of the “Divine Nine” sororities, has often acknowledged her connections to historically Black institutions.

However, the delivery of her speech sparked criticism on X (formerly Twitter), where some users suggested that the vice president was using a different accent than usual.

The account “End Wokeness” shared a clip of the speech, writing: “BREAKING: Kamala Harris unveils a new accent at the Black Caucus Dinner.”

The post quickly went viral, and other users weighed in. Paul A. Szypula, who has over 232,000 followers on X, responded, “New? Or is it her old fake black accent? Either way, it’s incredibly insulting to black people. Shame on Kamala.”

Another user, Collin Rugg, who has 1.4 million followers, wrote, “Kamala Harris brings out her new accent at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 2024 Phoenix Awards Dinner… Kamala has brought out this new accent throughout the campaign at different times.”

Critics pointed out that Harris, who was raised in Canada, has been known to use various accents depending on the location of her campaign events.

Some users on X noted that her speech patterns change when addressing different groups, leading to accusations of pandering.

Harris has been scrutinized for her fluctuating accents before, with side-by-side clips from earlier this month showing her using different tones while campaigning in Detroit and Pittsburgh on the same day.

This isn’t the first time Harris’s speech delivery has drawn attention.

Earlier in September, Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Harris’s varying accents during campaign stops. “Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a southern accent?” Doocy asked during a press briefing.

Jean-Pierre dismissed the question, responding, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She further downplayed the issue by suggesting Americans are more concerned with substantive matters like the economy and healthcare, rather than Harris’s speech patterns.

Harris’s schedule in the coming days reflects her focus on connecting with Black voters. On Tuesday, she is set to meet with members of the National Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia.

Additionally, on Thursday, she will participate in a livestreamed rally headlined by Oprah Winfrey, which will feature groups such as “Win with Black Women,” “White Women: Answer the Call,” and “South Asians for Harris,” according to the Associated Press.
