According to the latest Republican presidential primary tracker poll conducted by Morning Consult, former President Donald Trump continues to hold a significant lead over Governor Ron DeSantis.

The poll, which was published on Tuesday, shows that 56% of potential Republican primary voters support Trump for the nomination, while DeSantis sits 34 points behind at 22%. Despite this, DeSantis has gained slightly compared to last week’s poll, where he and the former president were at 24% and 58%, respectively.

Apart from Trump and DeSantis, no other candidate commands double-digit support. Former Vice President Mike Pence is backed by 7% of respondents, followed by former Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina with 4%.

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswmy is backed by 3% of the respondents, followed by former Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina at 2%.

Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Kristi Noem of South Dakota are tied at 2%, while Governor Glen Youngkin of Virginia, who has declared he will not run, and former Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas did not receive one percent of support.

Morning Consult also asked Trump and DeSantis supporters who their second choice would be. They both took strong pluralities of one another’s voters, with 44% of Trump backers identifying DeSantis as their second option, while 42% of DeSantis supporters say they would back Trump if the governor does not run.

Regarding hypothetical general election match-ups between the leading Republicans and President Joe Biden, Morning Consult gauged both GOP candidates as two points behind the president. Trump trails by a margin of 44% to 42%, while Biden leads DeSantis 43% to 41%.

Morning Consult sampled roughly 6,000 registered voters, including “3,389 likely potential GOP primary voters,” between April 28-30. The unweighted margin of error for the full sample is plus or minus one percentage point, while it is plus or minus one to two percentage points for the GOP primary aspect of the poll.
