FLORIDA – Democrat Charlie Crist, who is running against Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in the upcoming gubernatorial race, boasted of what could ostensibly be interpreted as a losing strategy for Florida’s high office, as he claimed during an interview on Good Morning America that the Sunshine State should institute “vaccine passports.”

Back in April of 2021, Governor DeSantis issued an executive order meant to address concerns about so-called “vaccine passports,” where his office specifically prohibited businesses from trying to force customers and patrons to produce documents showing proof of COVID vaccination in order to be serviced or gain entry to a business.

Per Governor DeSantis’ Executive Order 21-81, which was signed on April 2nd of, 2021, the section pertaining to private businesses and jab passports read, “Businesses in Florida are prohibited from requiring patrons or customers to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination or post-transmission recovery to gain access to, entry upon, or service from the business.”

The spirit of the executive order signed by the Florida governor last spring was crafted in the interest of protecting “patient privacy” and avoiding the creation of “two classes of citizens based on vaccination” but still allowed for businesses to perform “COVID-19 screening protocols” such as rapid temperature checks and the sort.

But in a little-known interview from May of 2021, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Crist championed the idea of having Floridians toting around de facto walking papers, saying the state “should have vaccine passports.”

Good Morning America host Amy Robach brought up the topic of vaccine passports, mentioning how Governor DeSantis had put an end to businesses trying to medically segregate their customers.

“Congressman, you know, Governor DeSantis has also banned businesses from requiring vaccine passports. And this obviously is going to have an impact on lots of businesses there in your state, including the cruise ship industry. Where do you stand on vaccine passports and businesses?”

Crist firmly responded, “We should have vaccine passports. I think that’s important.”

The Florida Democrat then went on to assert, “I met with some of the cruise line industry CEOs. And what they told me is that they don’t want to have a ship go out, you know, when we have three ports that really have an awful lot of cruise line industry, business jobs, etc. I mean, you know, if you talk about having 98% and you have 2% on the ship that are not vaccinated, you could suffer an outbreak. It would decimate the industry if that were to happen. I don’t know why the governor doesn’t believe in safety first, you know, I don’t get it. I really don’t. And that’s why I’m running against him. I think we need better, Florida deserves better – a Florida for all people.”
