Back in 2015, numerous news and media outlets praised Jamie Lee Henry for being somewhat of a pioneer for the transgender community as she revealed her new gender identity on BuzzFeed News. While that doesn’t sound that shocking, Henry is considered to be one of the first active-duty Army Officers to come out as transgender. Henry even legally changed her name. But while Henry presented herself as nothing more than a woman loving her country, on Thursday, she and her wife, Anna Gabrielian, were indicted for supposedly trying to supply Russia with soldiers’ medical records.

According to prosecutors, both Henry and Gabrielian met with a Russian diplomat in August to try and offer medical information from Fort Bragg. The base is the home of the elite fighting group Delta Force. What they didn’t know was that the Russian diplomat was actually an undercover agent for the FBI.

The Washington Free Beacon reported, “Gabrielian, an anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins University, told the undercover agent during an Aug. 17 meeting that ‘she was motivated by patriotism toward Russia to provide any assistance she could to Russia, even if it meant being fired or going to jail,’ according to the indictment. Gabrielian gave the undercover agent medical information on a spouse of someone who works in the Office of Naval Intelligence and ‘highlighted’ a medical issue that “Russia could exploit.”

Before facing criminal charges for trying to work with Russia, Jamie Lee Henry discussed his transition and the obstacles that presented themselves. At the time, Henry said, “I find my trans experience has allowed me to relate to people because all of us suffer, and I could relate to people’s suffering. I’m able to comfort people that feel isolated and lost and alone and broken”. She added that many trans people have a lack of privacy surrounding medical care. “I felt very vulnerable while being treated as a patient in the same hospital I worked as a physician. What made it worse was that, as a soldier, my medical records were not private, and when the question of mental illness came up, I felt stark naked.”

The prosecutors presented evidence showing that Jamie Lee Henry admitted to the undercover agent that he tried to enlist with the Russian military to fight Ukraine but was turned away due to his lack of combat history. He added that he believed “the United States is using Ukrainians as a proxy for their own hatred toward Russia.”

Discussing their children with the agent if they were detained, Gabrielian noted she wanted them to have a “nice flight to Turkey to go on vacation because I don’t want to end in jail here with my kids being hostages over my head.”
