MOSCOW, RUSSIA – According to a report from Reuters, three leaks among offshore lines from Nord Stream 1 and 2 were discovered, with officials saying the “unprecedented” damage between the three offshore lines was sustained in a single day.

Video reportedly showcasing the widespread nature of the leaks surfaced online on September 27th, with news outlet Inside Paper noting the footage depicts gas leaks “in waters off Denmark with bubbles spreading from 200 to 1,000 metres in diameter,” citing sources from the Danish military.

Reuters reported that the first leak was discovered along the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which led to Denmark restricting shipping activities within a five-nautical mile radius of the leak. Not long thereafter, two leaks were reportedly discovered by Sweden’s Maritime Authority along Nord Stream 1.

Nord Stream AG, the entity that operates the pipeline network, issued a statement noting that the estimated time needed to repair the damages is unclear due to the “unprecedented” extent of the damage discovered.

“The destruction that occurred on the same day simultaneously on three strings of the offshore gas pipelines of the Nord Stream system is unprecedented. It is not yet possible to estimate the timing of the restoration of the gas transport infrastructure.”

In the wake of these pipeline leaks, a renewed interest has cropped up over President Biden’s comments made on February 7th where he vowed before members of the press he’d “bring an end” to Nord Stream 2 if Russia invaded Ukraine.

“If Russia invades – that means tanks of troops crossing the border of Ukraine – again, then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We’re going to bring an end to it.”

When Biden was pressed by a reporter about his comments, asking, “How will you do that exactly, since the project – in control of the project – is within Germany’s control,” Biden responded with, “We will – I promise you, we’ll be able to do it.”

When Biden made the aforementioned comments, he was standing beside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the East Room of the White House. Members of the press were curious to see whether Scholz was on the same page as Biden at the time, which the German Chancellor simply responded with, “We will act together. We will not be taking different steps. And they will be very, very hard to Russia.”

Nord Stream 2, which runs near parallel to Nord Stream 1, had been completed in September of 2021 but had never officially launched since Germany refused to give it the green light, with the project completely coming to an end days before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th.

As for Nord Stream 1, the pipeline has been supplying gas directly from Russia to Germany since 2011 but has come to halt this past August. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline ceased its relaunch following maintenance performed over the summer, with Russian officials citing faulty equipment at a compressor station as well as the ongoing sanctions from Western countries regarding the conflict with Ukraine.
